Its the AT&T Take-over!

AT&T is no stranger to gobbling up smaller wireless firms on its march to be the biggest wireless carrier in the United States. The company gobbled up Cingular and made all of those customers into AT&T users. The same is expected to happen with T-Mobile now that AT&T has announced its intentions to purchase the carrier. The rub for customers on the T-Mobile network right now with a 3G mobile phone is that the devices will need to be replaced. If T-Mobile customer doesn’t replace their Mobile phones, they will not be able to continue to receive service. That points to AT&T moving all T-Mobile users to its current 3G frequencies and using the T-Mobile spectrum for something else. AT&T has noted that after the deal closes, which isn't expected for about 12 months, it will later change how the towers owned by T-Mobile operate. The 3G spectrum will be purposed for 4G service reports Yahoo News. AT&T's Ralph de la Vega says that this upgrade will occur as port of the normal upgrade process. He stated, "There's nothing for them to worry about ... it will be done over time, in a way that's good for customers and good for AT&T." De la Vega didn’t offer concrete upgrade plans for T-Mobile customers that aren’t at a renewal window. Presumably, they will be upgraded with a new 2-year contract agreement. He did note that the entire upgrade process would take several years.

Verizon HTC ThunderBolts's

Verizon has announced the availability of its first 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) smart phone, the ThunderBolt, made by HTC. Verizon is the only major carrier to roll out LTE 4G wireless services in the U.S. so far. The company has more than 40 major markets covered now, and more on the way.

True, MetroPCS offers LTE in its coverage areas. Sprint and Clearwire offer 4G WiMAX service in the U.S. as well. Up to now, Verizon didn’t offer an LTE cell phone. 4G service was via a laptop data card or dongle. The ThunderBolt, though, lets customers access the LTE network with a handset.
The ThunderBolt is somewhat similar to the HTC EVO 4G WiMAX model used by Sprint/Clearwire (see the figure). It has a larger 4.3-in. WVGA screen and offers two cameras, an 8-Mpixel rear camera with video record capability, and a 1.3-Mpixel front-facing camera. Also, it boasts 8 Gbytes of on-board memory and a pre-installed 32-Gbyte microSD card. The processor is Qualcomm’s 1-GHz Snapdragon, and the operating system (OS) is Android 2.2. Support software and services include Google Mobile Services such as Gmail, YouTube, and Android Market.

HTC Thunderbolt: Verizon Launching First 4G Phone w/ Unlimited Data

Verizon will be offering unlimited data with the HTC Thunderbolt, the first 4G LTE phone on its network, for $29.99 per month. Verizon insiders have indicated that new tier plans would replace the carrier’s unlimited data plans with the introduction of 4G LTE phones, but those plans are being put on hold…for now.
The HTC Thunderbolt is the first 4G LTE phone Verizon is supporting and it will go on sale Thursday. Verizon’s been selling 4G LTE modems for a few months, but has held off on introducing 4G LTE phones and tablets until now.
Here’s a quick walkthrough of the Verizon Thunderbolt by HTC at CES 2011.
Verizon charges $29.99 per month for unlimited usage of its 3G network on other phones, including the iPhone 4. By offering the same price on its first 4G device, Verizon will help avoid confusion and keep an objective over a price premium out of the mix as consumers weigh their options.
Verizon’s 4G LTE network is faster than many home and business connections, prompting some to consider cutting the cord to their DSL or cable providers. But Verizon’s long-term 4G wireless hotspot prices are still unknown. The carrier is offering complimentary wireless hotspot access on the HTC Thunderbolt through May 15, but hasn’t stated what Thunderbolt owners will have to pay to use the feature after that date. Verizon currently charges $20 per month for 2GB of hotspot bandwidth per month on its 3G smart phones.
As it stands, Verizon’s 4G LTE pricing is a much better value than AT&T’s data plans, which are capped. For those in areas with strong Verizon coverage it’ll be a no-brainer to opt for Verizon versions of popular smartphone if speed is important to you. In areas where AT&T’s service is flaky, such as in San Francisco, you’ll be able to make clearer calls. In our experience, Verizon’s 4G LTE network is significantly faster than Sprint’s 4G service, which means you’ll actually be able to take advantage of the Thunderbolt’s unlimited data plan.

Toshiba say's its upcoming Android tablet is 'superior' to the iPad 2!

Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave rivals a verbal bashing at the iPad 2 launch earlier this month, but now they're starting to hit back. Toshiba has put its head above the parapet, with one of its Australian execs promising that its upcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet will be superior to the new iPad.
Here's the exact quote from Toshiba's Rob Wilkinson on Aussie site Smarthouse: "We are confident that we can match Apple pricing for their new iPad 2 while delivering a device that is richer in features," he says. "We believe that our device is superior to the Apple device, it may be a little heavier (773g) but it does have a lot of features that the iPad 2 does not have."
That's fighting talk! Toshiba is currently showing its tablet off to retailers in the land Down Under, so what features does it have that will leap over the iPad 2's specs? We know a few from the prototype model shown off at CES earlier this year.
The as yet unnamed tablet will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb, with a 10.1-inch display and a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels -- that's a bit bigger and higher than the iPad 2 respectively.
Tosh's tablet will pack a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, whose performance we haven't been able to compare directly against the iPad 2's A5.
It will also have a built-in HDMI output, a 2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel rear camera. The cams are certainly higher resolution than what Apple is offering on its second-generation tablet, for which users will have to pay extra for an HDMI output accessory too.

Spycam Catches Samsung Stealth In The Flesh

The Samsung Stealth may be stealthy, but it couldn’t avoid getting snapped up by some spycam photos. Pictures have emerged of the Samsung Stealth V – the phone that was introduced by Verizon and Samsung at CES as only the “Samsung 4G phone” or something to that effect, and we weren’t happy with the lack of the name. Now, it’s come out, and it looks okay.
Samsung Stealth Spycam Photos
The device had been caught going through the FCC approval process a few days ago, and now, it’s been seen in the wild. Here’s a list of the reported specs that are going along with the photos that ore friends at TechnoBuffalo received:
  • 4.3-inch OLED Screen
  • 1GHz Hummingbird Processor
  • Android 2.2 Froyo
  • 8MP back facing camera
  • 1.3MP (VGA) front facing camera
  • 828MB flash storage
And, and as mentioned, its one of the four 4G phones that Verizon introduced at CES as their LTE phones. What’s interesting here is that the phone has undergone some stylish changes from when I saw it at CES. At CES, it had a more generic “Galaxy S” look to it, while the Stealth shown here has more sleek lines that kinda remind me of an F-35 fighter jet.
Anyway, of all four of the first Verizon 4G phones (this, the HTC Thunderbolt, the LG Revolution and Motorola Droid Bionic), I think any Android fan has to rate this one last just because of the fact that it is coming with Samsung’s horrid TouchWiz UI. The LG Revolution is also coming with a similar UI (from what I saw at CES, LG seems to be licensing Samsung’s TouchWiz for their own phones – considering that LG and Samsung are blood rivals over there in South Korea, that’s really weird), so I would personally give the Thunderbolt and Droid Bionic my personal nod at this point.
Anyway, UI aside, does the Samsung Stealth do anything for you? Are you waiting for this phone? Tell us about it in the comments section. Mobile Phones.

Worried About Cell Phone Radiation? 9 Great Ways To Be Safer.

You’re on on an endless conference call, using your cell phone. Should you worry about what the phone’s radiation is doing to your brain?
According to the latest research, you should be concerned and modify the way you use your cell phone.

First the background: Though the study is preliminary and raises more questions than answers, it was one of the first of its kind to find that low level radiation, the kind emitted from cell phones, altered brain activity.
The study, conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Drug Abuse and published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association, compared brain activity via a PET scan in subjects who had cell phones turned on for 50 minutes or turned off. The subjects did not know whether or not the phone was in use because the sound was muted. The researchers found a 7 percent increase in brain activity in the area closest to the phone, specifically an increase in the metabolism of glucose.

The iPad 2 Makes Its Debut

The wait is over for eager Apple fans wanting the next-generation iPad. At an invite-only event in San Francisco today, the company took the wraps off the iPad 2.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who is taking a leave of absence from the company, returned to unveil the new product, which is expected to be a hot seller.
As anticipated, the new tablet has two cameras and is faster with dual-core processors. They just about double CPU performance and make the graphics speed 9 times faster, while using the same power as the processor from the first iPad. The iPad 2 is thinner than the older model. It went from 13.4mm in thickness on the old iPad to 8.8mm in thickness on the new one. And it works not only on AT&T's 3G network, but also Verizon Wireless' 3G network.

T-Mobile Set to Shut Down Sidekick Service on May 31

For those few T-Mobile (News - Alert) customers who still own the once-popular Sidekick mobile phone, it's about time to start looking for a new handset.
The carrier issued a statement yesterday stating that it will shut down the service that handles the majority of the phone's functionality effective May 31, 2011. It seems that so many customers have switched to a new phone, it no longer makes sense for T-Mobile to pay for the handset's Danger Service, which is handled by a third party.
T-Mobile hasn't stocked the Sidekick for nearly a year now, so the vast majority of subscribers have probably used their incentives to upgrade to a more advanced smartphone.
