Super Bowl To Be Streamed to Mobile Phones

The Super Bowl will be streamed online and to mobile phones for the first time.
The NFL said Tuesday that NBC’s broadcasts of wild card Saturday, the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl would be available on the league’s and network’s websites and through Verizon’s NFL Mobile app. The package will include additional camera angles, in-game highlights and live stats.
NBC already streams its “Sunday Night Football” telecasts online and to Verizon phones.
The Super Bowl is Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. The game is annually by far the biggest attraction on television, with last season’s Packers-Steelers matchup drawing a record U.S. audience for any show with 111 million viewers.

Ban on Cell Phones Use While Driving?

U.S. drivers couldn't send text messages or use mobile phones -- even with headsets or portable speakers -- under a U.S. National Transportation Safety Board recommendation aimed at preventing distracted-driving crashes.

"Too many people are texting, talking and driving at the same time," NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said at a hearing in Washington today. "It's time to put a stop to distraction. No call, no text, no update is worth a human life."

Would this law make a difference? How do you feel about this? Tell us what you think?

3 Ways to Include Everyone This Christmas

With Christmas time rapidly approaching, everyone seem to be preparing to share and exchange gifts. In preparing ourseleves it’s important to include everyone. How many times have you looked back after Christmas only to realize that you left someone out? Today we will look at three simple ways to include everyone on your Christmas shopping list. Let’s get started.
1)      Host a Christmas Party: One way to include everyone on your shopping list is by having a Christmas party. Christmas parties are fun and everyone loves them. Why not host one?  You can put together a few of your willing friends to buy the refreshments, cook a few finger snacks and play a prerecorded Christmas CD. Encourage gift swapping. The gifts don't have to be large gifts. Something small will do.
2)      Make Small Christmas Gift Baskets:  Gather the name of each person in every family on your list. Make one gift basket per family and include something for everyone. Getting small gifts at your neighbor dollar store will not only save you money but makes for great gifts when including everyone.

Fresh Look at The Nokia Lumia

Nokia Windows Phone devices — Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 have finally been announced in India and will be available in a couple of weeks — around mid-December to be precise.

With the launch, Nokia has announced the beginning of a new ecosystem. Now Nokia will no longer focus its strengths on Symbianonly but on Windows as well. With the new Microsoft's Mobile operating system (Windows Phone) based devices Nokia has impressed millions of users across the globe and we hope many such products will keep coming as a result of the collaboration.

Nokia Lumia 800

Lumia 800 is Nokia's first Windows Phone based device and we managed to lay our hands on it at a press event where Nokia also revealed the smaller Lumia 710. The device is expected to be priced at Rs 29,000 and will be available for purchase from mid-December.

Nokia Lumia had been kept under wraps for a quite a long time. The phone both looks and feels great.

Lumia 800 comes with Nokia's very own clear black 3.7 inch display which looks impressive with native resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The most amazing characteristic of this device is its 252 ppi pixel density which makes visuals crisp, and there is hardly any visible pixilation. In comparison to the Samsung Omnia W, the display holds similar characteristics except that it lacks Corning's Gorilla glass. It reproduces bright and vibrant visuals that only the Nokia 700 shares because it uses the same display technology.

Nokia's new phone is 12.1 mm thick and weighs 142 grams. Though it is great to hold, its closest competitor Omnia W is lighter and slimmer. Lumia is available in cyan, black and fascia colours, which make the phone look classy and fresh.

Lumia 800 features a 1.4 GHz application processor to power Windows Phone Mango 7.5, coupled with 512 MB of RAM to keep things speedy and fluid. The device uses the native Windows user interface with live tiles, and works smoothly.

Nokia Lumia 800 has an 8 megapixel snapper encrusted with Carl Zeiss optics with a dual LED flash capable of recording 720p HD videos. In terms of hardware the smartphone is almost identical to the Samsung Omnia W but has internal storage capacity of up to 16 GB as compared to 8 GB on the Omnia W.

Lumia 800 has been made with a lot of emphasis on its looks and looks somewhat identical to the Nokia N9. But overall, the device is good but a bit overpriced. Samsung Omnia W comes for nearly Rs 20,000 while the Lumia 800 costs Rs 29,000 though the two have almost identical specifications.

Nokia, during the event, detailed quite a few features about this device but more information on that after the final review so stay tuned.

Adobe Abandons Flash Player for Mobile Phones

Adobe is throwing in the towel.

The Silicon Valley software company, which makes Photoshop and the ubiquitous Flash for websites, announced Wednesday it will no longer support the mobile version of its Flash Player for smartphones and computer tablets.

Instead, the company, which was co-founded by University of Utah graduate John Warnock, will focus its development on the programming language HTML 5, which is an easier way to develop animation and video on the Web.

The news is not surprising for Web and mobile application developers because the Apple iPhone and iPad, the world’s biggest-selling portable devices, have never supported Flash. And that Adobe will stop development for Flash should not affect what developers do, they said.

“You look at the horsepower to run Flash and the battery drain, it was never going to be the solution long term,” said Clark Stacey, president of Salt Lake City video game developer, Smart Bomb Interactive, which makes the Flash-based Web-browser game, “National Geographic Animal Jam.”

“We have not done anything Flash-related since Day One,” said Andrew Howlet, president and CEO of Rain Interactive in American Fork, which makes mobile apps for clients such as KSL, Skullcandy and Sony Music. “Adobe no longer has to throw good money at something. It became clear it wasn’t going to be adopted by Apple and by other small devices.”

Adobe Systems’ surrender is the end of a long and controversial battle with Apple over what would be the primary way of developing video and animation on mobile devices. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs adamantly refused to have the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad support the mobile Flash Player, claiming Flash was too slow, a big battery drain and was not an open platform for developers.

“The mobile era is about low-power devices, touch interfaces and open Web standards — all areas where Flash falls short,” Jobs wrote in a now-famous 1,500-word letter to customers in April 2010, explaining why his devices would not support Flash.

Droid Razr preorders begin today!

If you've been itching to get a Motorola Razr back in your pocket, your wait is almost over. Starting tomorrow, Moto's new Droid Razr will be available for preorder at Verizon Wireless.

Though it may carry the name of one of Motorola's most iconic devices, the Droid Razr is no simple revamp of that original phone. Sure, it's thin, but it packs a hefty feature load into a stunning design with stainless steel, Kevlar backing, and sculpted glass. So while it may be a beauty, it also has enough power to earn it a place in the Droid family.

The Droid Razr will run Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and includes remote wipe, PIN lock, and government-grade encryption for enterprise-minded customers.

Powering the smartphone is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM. In our brief time with the device, we were impressed by the Droid Razr's speed. It felt very responsive as we zipped around the menus and launched apps. Motorola also says battery life will not be compromised by the phone's size. It ships with a 1,780mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 12.5 hours, but of course, we'll have to see if this holds true in our battery drain tests.

Mobile providers to compensate BlackBerry customers

Users of the smartphone in Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), India and the Americas were affected by a patchy email service and had no access to browsing and messaging.

Research in Motion (RIM), the company which makes the handset, said there had been a "significant improvement" on Thursday.

But service operators in Britain are all in discussions to agree a compensation package for BlackBerry customers, with the money set to copme from RIM itself.

A spokesman for the company told Channel 4 News: "There is a structure in place to compensate (mobile phone operators) for service interruption, which in turn they could pass on to customers. It is something we are talking about, but we are working with our partners to get the service back to a level that customers have come to expect from us."

Spokespeople for Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile said that they were reviewing their options on compensation for users.

It is believed that reimbursements will vary from country to country.

In the Gulf, two operators - du and Etisalat - have both announced they will be offering three days free service.

'No preferential treatment'

Meanwhile, RIM insists it is not giving preferential treatment to its business customers in the country as it tries to get back to normal service.

The spokesman said it was standard practice to provide updates on an hour-by-hour basis to larger business customers, "given our direct relationship with them."

On Thursday morning, the company announced it had made "significant improvement" to its services.

Hands-on with the T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II

Regular readers know I have been very happy with Windows Phone 7 devices on T-Mobile for the past year, but I am always willing to try new devices and there are two new Android Gingerbread smartphones launching this week that have me seriously considering another SIM card switch on T-Mobile. I have been using the HTC Amaze 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II extensively since Friday and am ready to drop some cash this coming week, but on the device you might not have thought at first. You can check out several images of the devices in my image gallery and in my video first look below.

The Samsung Galaxy S II was announced at Mobile World Congress in February and then released outside the US starting in June after receiving pre-orders in excess of 3 million devices. It has been very successful outside the US and is just starting to roll out here with versions for T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T announced. After reading reviews applauding the device I couldn’t wait to give it a try on T-Mobile and was sure I was going to purchase one for myself.

Then I tried the HTC Amaze 4G that came out and slapped me upside the face with its incredible design. I was thinking the Amaze 4G was just another typical HTC black slab phone, but I have to say I think this may very well be the best designed HTC device I have ever had the pleasure of using as I will describe in more detail below.

Samsung Galaxy S II: In the box and first impressions

T-Mobile continues to use the durable well designed packages we have seen for a couple of years with high resolution glossy images of the device on the outside and a list of the main features on the back. You will find the device, battery, USB cable, USB charger, SIM card, wired stereo headset, and Quick Start Guide in the box.

I knew the T-Mobile variant of the Galaxy S II would come with the largest display of the variants at 4.52 inches, but when I pulled it from the box I admit I was shocked by how light the device was at only 4.77 ounces. Unlike some of the previous Samsung Galaxy devices it doesn’t feel cheap with a glossy black back and instead feels very well constructed with an attractive textured back. The display looks very nice, but doesn’t seem to “pop” out at me as much as other Super AMOLED Plus displays I have seen on Samsung devices in the past.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Specifications

Specifications for the Samsung Galaxy S II include the following:

  • Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
  • Samsung TouchWiz user interface
  • 42 Mbps HSPA+ support on T-Mobile’s AWS network
  • 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor
  • 4.52 inch WVGA 480×800 pixels Super AMOLED Plus display
  • Preinstalled 16GB storage with microSD card slot
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording capability
  • 2 megapixel front facing camera
  • Proximity sensor, light sensor and digital compass
  • Integrated A-GPS
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n)
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • DLNA support
  • HDMI support via MHL adaptor
  • NFC-enabled
  • 3.5 mm headset jack
  • 1850 mAh lithium-ion battery
  • Dimensions: 5.1 x 2.7 x 0.37 inches and 4.77 ounces

The Samsung Galaxy S II has a large display, but does not feel that large in your hand due to the very light weight and thinness of the device. It is an impressive piece of hardware and I am sure those looking for the biggest screen on a T-Mobile Android phone will love it.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Walk around the hardware

The front of the Galaxy S II is dominated by the 4.52 inch Super AMOLED Plus display. I find that Samsung’s AMOLED displays show vibrant colors and intense brightness, but even on maximum brightness this Galaxy S II just doesn’t seem to blow me away as much. There are four touch capacitive buttons (Menu, Home, Back, and Search), 2 megapixel front facing VGA camera, and proximity sensor.

The Galaxy S II minimizes the use of hardware buttons and ports with a single power/lock button on the upper right, a volume button on the upper left, a microUSB port on the bottom, and the 3.5mm headset jack on the top.

The 8 megapixel camera and single LED flash are found centered on the upper back with the Galaxy S II embedded in the center. The battery, SIM card slot, and microSD card slot are found under the back cover. I love the new textured back cover that gives the device a high quality feel and some grip in your hand.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Quick thoughts on the software and performance

I am not a huge fan of the TouchWiz user interface, but it is very snappy and customizable to a point. As an Exchange user I find that HTC Sense 3.0 blows away TouchWiz for email and PIM apps. There are several Samsung widgets on the device and I did find some to be useful.

There are several T-Mobile apps, such as Slacker, TeleNav GPS Navigator, T-Mobile TV, Qik Video Chat, and Visual Voicemail along with several Samsung apps. For some reason the version of Google Talk on the Galaxy S II does not support video chat using the front facing camera.

The Galaxy S II on T-Mobile has the fastest radio in the US, out of all SGSII devices, with support for T-Mobile’s 42 Mbps network. From my testing in Seattle I experienced a maximum download speed of 26.07 Mbps. Check out this post for details on my testing.

Samsung Galaxy S II: Pricing and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S II is available now for pre-order and available in stores on 12 October for $229.99 with a minimum voice and data plan with 2-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. The full retail price is $529.99 with no contract.

All eyes on the new $199 Amazon Kindle Fire tablet

At $199, the price of Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet is a tempting purchase for some iPad owners, who are wondering whether the tablets will coexist or compete.

Amazon on Wednesday introduced its first tablet, the Kindle Fire, which is now available for order on Amazon's retail site. The tablet has a 7-inch multitouch LCD display and Google's Android OS, and provides easy access to Amazon's application store and music, video and cloud services.

Kindle Fire joins a tablet market dominated by Apple's iPad, which is projected to have a 73.4% market share by year end, according to research firm Gartner. While some analysts have argued that Kindle Fire could pose a competitive threat to the iPad, others have argued that Amazon's tablet is more of a threat to other Android tablets, which cannot compete with Amazon on services, entertainment and cloud offerings.

The iPad has an established following that's hard to shake, said David Daoud, research director at IDC. But at $199, the Kindle Fire is $300 cheaper than the entry-level iPad 2, and could be an attractive companion device.

Beyond the price, some potential buyers cited Kindle Fire's browser, called Silk, which uses a cloud service to pre-process Web pages to make browsing faster.

Dave Winer, one of the pioneers of RSS and podcasting, and now a visiting scholar at New York University, has already ordered the Kindle Fire. He is appreciative of Amazon's investment in making the Web better and creating a new browser.

"They've really worked well to make the Web work on this device," Winer said.

Winer noted that Apple's lack of Flash support doesn't help browsing on the iPad, which he uses for Web activity and email, among other tasks.

Winer found Kindle Fire's price economical, but he already owns an iPad and is not really sure how the two tablets would compete head-to-head. The Kindle Fire has yet to be tested, so it's hard to set expectations for the device, but he is an active customer of Amazon and also a member of Amazon Prime, which offers unlimited instant movie and TV show streaming as one of the benefits.

"They are offering competition for Apple, and that's good. Maybe users will come out ahead," Winer said.

Combining Silk with Kindle Fire will speed up browsing, said Michael Vorel, CEO of Vastplanet. Vorel already owns an iPad and wants to buy the Kindle Fire tablet.

"I never enjoyed reading on the iPad; I think [Kindle Fire] would fill in as a way to read books, but, number two, I really like the cloud integration," Vorel said. With the iPad, Vorel felt trapped with content on one tablet and having to use iTunes to sync. Amazon has said it will offer free cloud storage for Amazon content, and Vorel said he likes the idea of having content available anytime through the cloud.

But Vorel believes the two tablets can coexist. The iPad is "hands down" great for entertainment, Vorel said, and he would like his daughter to have the iPad on a trip. At the same time, Amazon's Kindle Fire will provide access to Amazon's cloud and video services, which is valuable, Vorel said.

Rick Mathieson, a noted writer and creative strategist, said at $199, the Kindle Fire might be a good purchase as a media consumption device for his family.

But as cool as the Kindle Fire might sound, he loves the iPad, and is keeping that for himself.

"I own an iPad 2 and nothing's going to replace that," Mathieson said.

It automatically scans all files in the background, both in the device and on the memory cards. When an infected file is detected it is immediately quarantined to protect all other data in the system. The antivirus database is updated invisibly in the background when connected to internet. Currently, there are three versions available, one for S60 1st Edition (Nokia 3650, 3660, 7650, etc), another one for S60 2nd Edition (Nokia 6600, 6630, 6680, N70, N90, etc), and the last one for S60 3rd Edition (Nokia N71, N80, E60, E61, E70, etc). Make sure that you download the correct version to secure your cellphone against viruses and malware.

5 Smart Mobile Security Tips

Security firms have long predicted that cybercriminals would focus efforts on smartphones and tablets. Well, this year that prediction might finally come true for mobile users.
The increasing importance of smartphones and tablets in the lives of consumers and workers has made the devices more attractive to attackers. In 2010, for example, more mobile devices--such as smartphones and tablets--were sold than PCs and laptops, according to Forrester Research.

Though the same general advice applies to securing a laptop as it does for a desktop, the ultra-mobility of smartphones and tablets has led to different threats and different recommendations for securing these smaller devices.
"The only way to truly, fully secure a smartphone is to protect the device, protect the data, and protect the apps on the device," says John Dasher, senior director of mobile security at security firm McAfee. "If you don't do all three, inherently, the device is not secure."
In a report on the malicious-software landscape for the second quarter of 2011, McAfee noted a continued increase in the amount of malware encountered by mobile users, with the Android platform becoming the most targeted for the first time.
With malware on the rise, and lost phones with sensitive data still the No. 1 issue, security experts offer five essential steps to protect popular mobile devices.
1. Lock the device. Lost and stolen devices continue to be the most serious threat for businesses and consumers.
On average, North American and European companies lose 11 smartphones every year, according to Forrester Research. Consumers and companies worried about the sensitive data on the phone should make an easy-to-type password their first line of defense, says Andrew Jaquith, the former Forrester analyst who authored the report and is now chief technology officer for Perimeter E-Security.
However, the password needs to be long enough so "you can pair it with an auto-destruct policy--fail eight times to enter the right password and it deletes the data on the phone--to be sure your data will be safe," says Jaquith.
If the phone can be remotely wiped using mobile-device management software or a similar service, then the auto-destruct policy can be more lenient, he says.
2. Avoid questionable apps. Almost every piece of malicious software that has infected a phone has been a Trojan horse. DroidDream, the most successful malicious app, infected a quarter million Android phones in March by posing as real applications.
Users should download apps only from trusted app stores and stick with the more popular apps, says Michael Sutton, vice president of research for cloud security firm Zscaler.
"Encourage people to install their apps through vetted platforms," he says. "Some are better vetted, such as Google's Android Marketplace and Amazon's and Verizon's app stores."
Although Google's store did offer DroidDream for a time, the software giant can automatically uninstall bad programs and clean up a user's phone.
Android users also can benefit from the wisdom of the crowds by downloading only apps that have a significant number of reviews and comments, says Neil Daswani, chief technology officer of Web anti-malware firm Dasient.
"Trojans don't get to the point where they rack up millions of users, so look at the comments left by the other users," he says.
3. Accept the patches. Similar to PCs, mobile phones need to be patched often to eliminate vulnerabilities found since the phone's release. The good news is that unlike security vulnerabilities in Android, which can take time to make their way to the phone, updates are done over the air. Users should always accept the updates, says Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer for mobile security firm Lookout.
"When you are prompted on Android, update," he says. "For iPhone users, it's a bit more complex. You need to plug in and update your apps."
Until Apple's iOS 5 arrives for iPhones, Apple users should synch their device regularly to get updates.
4. Back up your data. Mobile devices are easy to back up, a characteristic users should make the most of.
Users who back up regularly are less likely to lose data even if their company has a strict auto-destruct policy for lost or stolen phones, says Zscaler's Sutton.
"Now that there is over-the-air syncing and updates, it's really easy to restore your phone," he says. "If your phone gets taken or the data deleted, it takes 30 minutes and your phone is back to normal."
5. Stay safely behind bars. Finally, though some compelling reasons exist for consumers to jailbreak their phones, security experts advise users to just say no.
So much of a phone's security is tied to code signing and software sandboxing that jailbreaking a phone--removing the digital-rights management that locks it to a certain carrier--means significantly weakening the security of the device.
"When you look at what happens with the security of your phone, there are some pretty significant consequences from jailbreaking," says William Enck, an assistant professor at North Carolina State University who recently presented research into the Android platform at the USENIX Security Conference.
One step that users may do without: Installing antivirus software.
Many of the functions of antivirus software, such as blacklisting bad applications and giving the thumbs up to good applications is baked into the app market models, Enck says. Until antivirus companies offer more features than just blocking bad apps, consumers can risk not buying the software, he says.
"I don't think it's necessary yet, but I hold the right to change my mind," Enck says.

HTC Says the iPhone is Not Cool!

HTC has decided to thrown some mud in Apple’s direction, mocking their hugely popular line of smartphones. The boss of HTC America, Martin Fichter, has branded the iPhone as a device that is “not cool any more”, despite the 3GS and 4 being the best selling handsets in the US. With the iPhone 5 out in less than a month, will it need to stand out to render Fichter’s comments as merely trash talk?
Is the iPhone “uncool”? Absolutely not, the figures speak for themselves. The iPhone 5 is one of the most anticipated products to ever launch and sales are expected to go through the roof. We expect Apple’s 5th smartphone to be very cool indeed, so why is the HTC chief talking such rubbish? According to Mashable, Fichter undertook an informal survey on his daughter’s college friends and found out which mobile phones they had, the results seem to be the basis of his opinion.
The HTC boss claims that “none of them had an iPhone”, the reason being that it was because their dad had an iPhone. The classic theory of parents and their kids sharing the same interests being uncool looks to have come into play here. Fichter said that many of the students instead had HTC, Samsung and devices from a Chinese manufacturer, as a substitute for the iPhone. Have you opted against Apple’s mobile because your parents have one?

Q1 mobile numbers: Android is up, Microsoft takes a dive

Gartner has finished collecting data on mobile phone sales and market share for the first quarter of 2011, and while no one expected Android to slow down, few people expected the platform to pick up as much steam as it has.
Android devices now make up over 36 percent of the mobile phone market worldwide, with 36.27 million devices shipping in Q1 alone. The only other company to enjoy significant growth was Apple. The iPhone moved up to 16.8 percent of all mobile phones worldwide, nearly double its market share from a year ago.
The rest of the numbers look bad for their respective companies. Sales of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 flagged, topping only 1.6 million devices of the total 3.66 million mobile phones that run a Microsoft operating system. That 3.66 million is a big number, but it actually represents a sharp decline from a year ago, from 6.8 percent of overall global mobile share to 3.6 percent.

Most analysts point to a lack of manufacturer interest in Windows Phone 7 as the root of Microsoft’s dropping market share in the mobile space: developers are interested in the platform, and many customers are too, but the handset manufacturers simply haven’t lined up.

Google is on a Mission to Control Your Home

First Google dominated the Web with search. Then it ruled mobile devices with Android. Now Google wants to control everything inside your home.
At its annual I/O developers conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, the company previewed Android@Home, a future platform that will allow you to interact with practically any electronic device you own using Google (GOOG, Fortune 500). Connected devices like home media equipment, dishwashers, cars, and lights could soon be able to be controlled using the new platform.
"We'd like to think of your entire home as an accessory, or better yet as a network of accessories, and think of Android as the operating system for your home," said Joe Britt, head of the Android@Home team.
Controlling connected devices with a smartphone, tablet, PC or another gizmo has been discussed for years. Recently, some early attempts have emerged, including pill bottles that link to your phone or cars that can be turned on with through a mobile app. But those are prototypes -- little has been done on a larger scale.
The chief obstacle to making that happen across all connected devices is finding a single, open standard to control everything you own. Right now, most manufacturers of connected devices write their own proprietary software for controlling appliances. Your iPhone can control your Apple TV, and Windows Phone can control your Windows PC, for instance.

Are smartphones becoming tablets?

AT&T and Samsung unveiled the Infuse 4G on Thursday in New York City. One of the most noteworthy and noticeable specs was the 4.5-inch display, which raises the question: is the line between smartphones and tablets becoming blurred?
While the 4.5-inch diagonal Super AMOLED Plus touch screen isn’t that far off from other large smarpthones like the 4.3-inch displays on the HTC Evo 4G and Motorola Droid X, it is certainly getting closer to some of the smaller-scale tablets such as the original 5-inch Dell Streak.
When holding the Infuse 4G initially, it definitely felt like a bulkier smartphone. Sure, it’s only 8.99mm thin, making it slim enough to fit into a pocket, but it could definitely stick out of a pocket. It’s not large enough in any regards to be considered a tablet, but a display this large for a smartphone is pushing the boundaries - perhaps unnecessarily.
Smartphone manufacturers and wireless providers have tried to advertise larger smartphones such as the HTC Droid Incredible as perfect for watching movies while traveling, and the Infuse 4G would definitely be the optimal choice if that’s why a consumer is buying a smartphone. But video playback usually isn’t the sole reason a consumer would buy a smartphone.
A 4.5-inch display just isn’t necessary for a smartphone - let alone one running only Android 2.2. The large display and the thin frame are the only qualities that make the Infuse 4G stand out from the plethora of other 4G-enabled, Android smartphones rolling out in 2011. Perhaps if it was running Gingerbread or offered some other unique productivity features, then the Infuse 4G would be more significant.
At this point, it seems that mobile phone manufacturers want to push how large a smartphone display can be. While it’s great that developers and designers want to push the boundaries, eventually we’re going to hit the limit. Smartphones already have their own place with smaller screens, and consumers will buy tablets if they want and/or need a device with a panel that measures seven inches or larger. There is no need to enlarge smartphones to the point where they might feel like mini-tablets. Mobile Phones Website!

The New T-Mobile G2x (with Google)

T-Mobile’s latest entry in its G-series of Android phones and tablets, the G2X ($200 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile; price as of April 15), is a multimedia beast with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, HDMI-out and 4G speeds. It sounds good on paper, but how does it compare to the other dual-core, 4G phones out there?

Thin, minimalist design

You might remember the LG Optimus 2X from CES 2011—LG’s first foray into the land of dual-core Android smartphones. The Optimus 2X is currently available overseas: NVIDIA used the LG Optimus 2X to demo its Tegra 2 chip at its CES press conference, showing off HD video and an Angry Birds demo. NVIDIA also dubbed it a “super phone” for its strong multitasking capabilities and processing speed.
The G2X has essentially the same design, but comes with HSPA+ power and does not have LG’s proprietary interface running atop Android. Besides those differences, and of course some branding from T-Mobile, the G2X is virtually identical to its international sibling.
The G2X is pretty basic looking with its black, dark gray and silver color scheme. But don’t let its generic appearance fool you: This phone has an incredibly high-quality feel. The face of the phone is comprised almost entirely of the display with a thin piano-black bezel running around it. Four touch-sensitive buttons lie below the 4-inch display: Menu, Home, Back, and Search. The back of the phone is a matte dark gray soft-to-the-touch rubber with a silver stripe bearing the Google logo running down the middle. The battery cover is very easy to remove, but doesn’t feel flimsy by any means. A metal frame between the face and the back cover around the phone gives it a sturdy, solid feel. The face of the phone is subtly curved, too, which feels comfortable when you’re holding it up to your ear.
At the top of the phone, you’ll find the power/lock key, HDMI port, and a 3.5-mm headphone jack. On the right spine you’ll find the volume rocker, while the left spine is bare. The bottom houses speakers as well as the microSD port.

Skype For Android Wants To Be Your Phone!

A strong updated Skype client for Google Android devices is available beginning Wednesday, with a couple of notable enhancements: a security patch and support for voice calls over 3G networks all over the world, including the U.S. The freeware, found in Google’s Android Market, includes mobile calls on the Skype network, instant message text chat, call forwarding, voicemail, and low-rate calls to mobile numbers and landlines. Wider adoption of 3G voice calls for Skype could hint at a future Skype phone. The newest client patches a security hole that was found last week and acknowledged by the Skype team.

Clearly, a third-party application could exploit the fact that both Skype profile information and instant messages were cached locally and unprotected on a handset. Using software, this exposed data could be captured and sent elsewhere, without the handset owner’s knowledge. With today’s update, the data is now protected and can’t be exploited by a third-party application. Ending the security gap is vital, but so too is support for calls over cellular high speed networks in the U.S.

The Blackberry PlayBook

With the premiere of the BlackBerry PlayBook, Research in Motion enters the tablet market with a device that has some solid points but, surprisingly, falls short in a few ways—particularly when it comes to e-mail access. (See Consumer Reports video, below.)
RIM touts the PlayBook as “the world’s first professional-grade tablet.” But the PlayBook’s biggest shortcoming hits professional users where it hurts most: in its lack of an e-mail client. If you’re a BlackBerry user, you have to wirelessly connect your mobile phone to the device, and keep it nearby, to enjoy your mail.
There are some positives with the PlayBook. Its display is crisp and bright, and the display screen is responsive and quick. And the tablet is slim and light, making it easily portable.
The device’s navigation gets mixed reviews. The navigation is nothing like what you find on the BlackBerry smartphone, which might be off-putting to those accustomed to that device. An upward swipe moves you from one screen to another, but it wasn’t immediately apparent that this was the way to get around. The PlayBook would benefit from a Home and Back button, and the Off button is tiny and hard to depress. On the plus side, the PlayBook has a convenient Play/Pause button on the top of the device for starting and stopping music and videos.
I liked the Web browser, which assists you to call up a navigation bar on top of the screen where you can easily open and view numerous pages. As do many other tablets, the PlayBook has an HDMI and a USB port, as well as front- and rear-facing cameras.
The PlayBook uses the BlackBerry Tablet operating system, and has its own app store. Sadly, the app store doesn’t have the big selection you find in Apple’s and Google’s stores.
Prices for the PlayBook range from $500 for the 16GB model to $700 for a 64GB version. Look out for our lab test results and Rating (available to subscribers) very soon.
